Understanding the food that you put into your body is an important part of gaining control over your weight and body composition. In our latest post, we talked about the different types of fats found in the foods we eat. Today’s blog post is about the difference between complex and simple carbohydrates, and the benefits or lack thereof that they have when it comes to using food as fuel for our bodies.
At Atlas Nutrition, we take nutrition very seriously when it comes to weight loss and competition prep. The food that we put into our bodies should be used, most importantly, as energy. Energy to lift, to propel us through the day, and even help us sleep better and recover at night. Carbs are often seen as a no-no when it comes to some dieting techniques, however, the right carbs can promote muscle growth and be the best source of energy that you’ll find! Keep reading to learn the difference between these two types of carbs and what foods are best to incorporate into your diet in order to reach your health and fitness goals.
For the most support when it comes to crushing these goals, get in touch with us at Atlas Nutrition to learn more about our coaching plans and packages. We’re ready to help you make serious strides in your fitness journey!
Simple Carbs
Simple carbs are just that — simple. They are broken down by the body quickly and used as energy. Simple carbs are naturally found in foods like milk and fruits, and also in processed items like candy, sugar, syrups, and soft drinks. As you might have guessed, while they do provide energy, they are not your best source of energy. Simple carbs can give you a quick boost, but they wear off quickly and leave you tired and hungry again.
Simple carbs have had most of the nutrients and fiber removed, which is why it’s hard to stay full and satisfied when you’ve loaded up on simple carbs.
Some examples of simple carbs include:
- Raw sugar
- Brown sugar
- Corn syrup
- Fruit juice concentrate
- Soda
- Baked treats
- Packaged cookies
-
Breakfast cereal
Complex Carbs
Complex carbs are full of nutrients, unlike the simple carbs. They are high in fiber and the body digests them more slowly, which means that they keep you full for longer. Complex carbs are your better option for prolonged energy and weight control.
There are two types of complex carbohydrates — fiber and starch. Complex carbs are better for you because they make it easy to maintain and healthy weight, they help control cholesterol, and they even can help protect your body from cardiovascular problems.
Some complex carbohydrates include:
- Fruits
- Vegetables
- Nuts
- Beans
- Whole grains
- Whole wheat bread
- Cereal
- Corn
- Oats
-
Peas
